|Joe Garcia was born in El Paso, Texas. But it was in California as a child working with his father that he was introduced to selling fresh product to local markets. When Joe was 18 he was drafted into World War II as a Paratrooper, 503rd he served his country with pride. After the war he had the entrepreneurship spirit and involved himself in politics too. Joe helped get into office some of Los Angeles first Latino elected officials such as congressman Roybal. Joe ran the Rockefeller campaign office in East Los Angeles, when Rockefeller was running for President of the United States. Joe began a magazine called “Mas Graphicas” the first bi-lingual magazine that incorporated Latinos in politics, business, sports, entertainment and fashion. Joe eventually sold the magazine to a radio station.It was in the early 70’s that Joe decided to open his first Mexican restaurant in Huntington Beach, California and in Castaic, California, better known as the Grapevine. This was not enough for Joe he was frustrated with the lack of authentic Mexican food in the supermarkets so Joe decided to create El Rey Mexican Food Company and it was successful he was able to prove to the supermarkets who were hesitant at first, the need to carry authentic Mexican food.
It was 1983 with the Help of his wife Virginia and his brother-in-law Jessie that Joe had the drive to create another Mexican food Company, Reynaldo’s Mexican Food. This company was named after Grandpa, Reynaldo Marquez. Reynaldo’s was and still is a huge success, at one time reaching 300 employees, seven manufacturing facilities, warehouses in Denver, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and $26 million dollars in annual sales. Joe was able to create the most successful and most recognized Mexican Food companies in the United States.
In 2009 Joe decided to move on and come back to where it all started for him.
